In the digital age, managing large volumes of data poses challenges for companies. Relying on hyperscalers like AWS and AZURE can lead to very high and uncontrolled costs.
Hyperscaling costs become more and more exorbitant as your business grows. Additionally, lack of control over your own data and the underlying infrastructure, as well as limitations on updates and long-term flexibility, are significant concerns.
More and more companies are considering using their own data center, or third parties, to relocate their systems, looking for hybrid solutions, proximity to the provider, personalized services and significant cost savings.
Complete control over data, customized security, and greater flexibility are key benefits. In the long term, it translates into considerable savings in operation and maintenance costs, with the ability to optimize resources according to needs.
Real case, SAP Hana:
- Background
Our client, a leading company in the industrial sector, carried out the migration of its SAP ERP to HANA technology in a virtual environment within a large hyperscalar a few years ago. This choice provided a fast, operational and flexible implementation with minimal initial investment.
However, the exponential growth of the database in RAM and disk storage significantly exceeded the estimated costs, creating considerable financial pressure. Furthermore, the lack of competent technical resources in these environments aggravated the situation.
The surge in data also put pressure on contingency and backup systems, increasing budgetary strain. The shortage of hyperscaler experts and the resulting inflated costs prompted the search for more efficient and cost-effective solutions.
- Solution
Uniway was selected as a provider of HANA infrastructure services from its datacenter.
The main challenge was to transfer the data in a safe, reliable and guaranteed manner to Uniway's data center for import into the new system.
By leveraging Uniway’s expertise in NetApp Cloud Sync, a tool designed to move large amounts of data between hyperscalers and data centers, we achieved a fast and secure transfer of large volumes of NFS storage data from the cloud to the on-premises system within Uniway’s infrastructure.
- Migration process
- Detailed Planning : Extensive planning was undertaken including identification of critical data, scheduling of phased migration, and implementation of security measures.
- Cloud Sync Configuration – Uniway configured NetApp Cloud Sync to synchronize and migrate data from cloud servers to Uniway’s on-premises data center storage infrastructure.
- Seamless Migration : With Cloud Sync’s ability to perform online, seamless migrations combined with 24x7 monitoring from Uniway’s NOC, the company was able to maintain synchronization to minimize SAP service downtime.
- Resource optimization : Once the migration was complete, the infrastructure was optimized using the StaaS service with NetApp's “ONTAP Select”, provided by Uniway within its own infrastructure. The purpose was to take advantage of the ONTAP operating system to optimize and protect data, with the perspective of implementing in the future, quickly and easily, an essential Disaster Recovery (DRP) project in accordance with the operational needs of the business.
Using NetApp Cloud Sync services and Uniway infrastructure, the migration was smooth and fast, achieving cost improvements of over 40%.
